Basic hard wood sanding facts

Has your hard wood floor started to lose its polish and shine? Does it look old and dirty despite copious amount of cleaning? It seems that it’s time for a hard wood sanding procedure. Getting a professional floor sanding Maryborough to do the job is a great idea. All you need to do is call the company and set up a date and appointment when you want the procedure to be carried out.

What happens during a floor sanding procedure?

On the day of the sanding the professional would come in equipped with a stand behind floor sander, and a hand held power edge sander. Both these equipment’s are attached to a vacuum and dust bag to collect all the dust from the sanding procedure.

The professional would cover their faces and ears with a mask. The eyes are covered with special glasses. The first things they would do is to ensure the size and dimension of the floor which needs to be sanded. This would help them determine the number of belts and sanding discs which would be required to get the work done. The condition of the floor would also help them choose a sander with either a coarse, medium or fine sand paper.

Once the measurements are known and all the equipment ready, the room has to be prepared for the process. All the furniture in the room is moved off and the doorways are covered with plastic. The air vents are covered properly and all the low laying fixtures are removed so that there are no hindrances when work is being carried out.

Once the room is prepped the sanding can begin. All the corners are sanded with the help of paint scraper because the sanding machine can’t get into corners easily.

Once the sanding is completed its time to check the area for any nicks and cracks. The professionals make sure to fill in those with the help of wood putty. It is then allowed it to dry and the area is again sanded with a fine sand paper.

When the sanding procedure is completed, the professional would make sure to get rid of the dust on the walls. The residue on other pieces of the floor is wiped off with a wet cloth. It’s normally advisable to wait for the dust to settle. Once that’s done all the dust is removed carefully.

The final task is to add a finish to the recently sanded floor. There are three options to choose from. These include:

  • Polyurethane finish which is either water or oil based. This kind of finish is very glossy and somehow tends to resemble plastic coating. However it’s highly effective in areas with greater traffic. Tis finish can also darken the color of the floor, so keep that in mind when choosing the finishing.
  • Finishing with varnish is also an option. It makes the flooring easier to maintain.
  • There is also an option of choosing penetrating sealer finishing which is more natural looking and can help bring out the grain of the wood.
