CLOSER.

The chin region, specifically.

BlindPimple

Can’t see anything?

Doesn’t matter, I am feeling enough for both of us to be able to see it because there is a WHOPPING great shiner on my chin. It feels like the size of a 5c piece, and might well be. As it’s a blind pimple, I can’t see it’s head yet, but oh, it’s coming. The fact that my whole chin is pulsing with pain guarantees it. Why it’s pulsing, for the record, is because it’s so deep, right down near my nerves. Regular, 20/20 vision pimples are up close to the top layer of skin, God bless them. So thoughtful.

In the interest of it not ruining my face for the next 10 days, and especially for the wedding I am attending this weekend, here’s how I will be dealing with this bastard. The technique works, which is the good news provided I  DO NOT pick at it, which I won’t. The bad news is that I have been known to pick at it.

While it’s just a painful, red, half-bump ice it and reduce the swelling

This is crucial, this bit. If you play this right, it might not Vesuvius all over your face. So: take an ice cube, and wrap in a tissue. Hold it on the spot for five minutes on, 10 minutes off. Do this at least three times in a row if you can. Drink lots of water.

When it starts to show a head, you need to carefully, gently get The Monster up to the surface

After a shower (the steam assists greatly in the drawing-out process), take a clean face cloth or a thick cotton pad and dip it into a sink of as-hot-as-your-skin-can-handle, water. Hold this compress, while swearing and kicking the toilet, for as long as possible. Re-dip in the water when it cools down. Do this for at least five minutes.

Now apply a drawing paste, a thick goo usually comprised of things like clay, sulfur and zinc oxide, to the head of the pimple with a cotton tip, and go to bed so it can do it’s work. and you will have either a very obvious whitehead in the morning, (or as sometimes magically happens, just a some faint redness, because it’s matured the whitehead so fully that it’s completely gone.)

Payot-pate-grise

I have been a tremendous fan of the famous and fantastic Payot Pate Grise for many years, and my beloved pimple drying lotion by Mario Badescu also works (although the skin will lightly flake due to the benzy peroxide). Magnoplasm, a hardcore drawing agent for boils, splinters and blind pimples is also excellent, albeit stinky and gross to use.

When the whitehead is right at the surface, it’s time to carefully extract

If things are still red and tender, or shiny and taut, no touchy touchy. It’s not ready. Conceal it and repeat the drawing process that night/as soon as it’s viable.

If the whitehead is more evident than redness, and it’s trying to jump out of your skin, you’re ready, sugar.

Do the hot water compress biz from above for a couple of minutes, then wrap half a tissue around each of your index fingers. Put a finger each side of the whitehead, then carefully, very gently, with NO NAILS DIGGING IN, push down on the sides, then kind of roll your fingers upwards to encourage the head to pop out. The idea is to get down deep on the sides, and push the very bottom of the whitehead up and out. Do the same motion from a few different spots to share the pressure (and fun!) around.

You should see no blood. There shouldn’t even be indentations where you’ve been pushing: it has to all be very gentle.

Finishing up and preventing scarring…

This bit is important, you guys. Once you’ve popped it’s all open to bacteria, so be sure to lock that shit well out.

First, apply a bit of pressure on the spot, to stop any potential bleeding or swelling and redness. Then wipe on some purifying lotion with a cotton ball or pad. I love Gernetic’s Sebo-Ger, or Garnier’s Pure Active Daily Pore Purifying Toner.

Garnier Pure Pore Toner

Now leave it the hell alone for a couple of hours. It needs to heal and breathe. So no makeup, nothing. (Extractions are always best done at night, or a few hours before you need to go out.) Once the area is flaking a bit, and dry, use some paw paw ointment or some such natural emollient on the area to encourage healing and scar reduction.

If you follow these steps, you can successfully wallop a blind pimple without all the mess that usually accompanies them.

If follow these steps, I get all of that and a Snickers Ice Cream bar as a special reward.

OMG! I’m sure your living my skin life. Ever since announcing our engagent and starting to plan our wedding my skin, particularly on my chin, has gone into hormonal hell. I have just purchased a Clarisonic Mia on your recommendation to try and adjust the general appearance of my skin but the blind pimples are something I’ve never experienced before and don’t really know how to deal with them. My current procedure of squeezing them at the base for a number of days to tempt the head to the top is not working. Needless to say I just end up with sore and red skin and the pimple executable returns at a later stage in the same spot. I’m currently recovering from one now. Next time (although I’m hoping it will be a long way off with the use of the Mia) ill at least know how to safely tread. Thanks!

    • Kylie says:

Enevitably = executable. Although blind pimples should be punished by execution! : )

    • sonyafby says:

i used to get blind pimples on my chin all the time.
      ALL.
      THE.
      TIME.
      hell.
one thing i noticed, they often appeared exactly where my work telephone receiver touched my chin. GROSS. anti-bac that sh!t.
also, i got a prescription for retin-a. i had so much congestion on my chin it was no wonder i got blindies (term of endearment?). the retin-a totally cleared the congestion.
also, i started to use 2.5% benzac on my chin every morning and night after washing my face. amazing! totally kept my skin clear and the blindies at bay. wish i’d known about this years ago.

    • Lauren says:

Physical exfoliation (via the clarisonic or face “scrubs”) will cause these blind pimples, for some ppl (me too). It’s from the physical exfoliant causing a microtear in the skin, that bacteria then crawls down into, & causes these horrendous marbles underneath the skin.

  2. Alex says:

Oh Zoe are you reading my mind? I had a massive blind pimple on my forehead which has now almost become a regular pimple… Yay…

  3. Bella says:

Zoe, what product would you recommend me to use on my scars from past pimples?

    • Miranda says:

Try the Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector. It’s not cheap (it’s not too expensive either having said that), so maybe order from strawberrynet.com but this REALLY works. And I got it from a Zoe-recommendation too. You have to persist with it for about 2 weeks before you notice a difference in my experience, 4-6 weeks it will really start to take off, if you are not slack about remembering to apply it. Wear your sunscreen over top, it makes your skin sensitive.
I also use Mario Badescu healing cream (I got mine from Mecca) and although it doesn’t seem to help much with older pigmentation scars I do find that if I use it when I get a pimple in the first place it stops it from pigmenting and the spots fade away really quickly as the pimple heals up.
Hope this helps :) None of it will work on ice-pick scars but if you just have red spots from pigmentation of the skin it should help.

      • Sara says:

        Miranda

Do you use Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector just for pimple marks or for pigmentation more generally?

I’m always on the look out for products that will treat my (hormonal) pigmentation. The Ultraceuticals serum was helping but it seems to have hit a plateau…

        • Bella says:

          Thanks for that, Miranda! :)

        • Miranda says:

I am pretty lucky and only really have pigmentation from acne (well… define lucky). I would give it a go though, the worst it will do is not work, and a little amount of this stuff goes a REALLY long way so you aren’t wasting it either. Just make sure you put your sunscreen on in the morning over the top once it has soaked in!!

      • Bella says:

        Thanks for that, Miranda! :)

    • Lucy says:

I have super silly skin, and have been hooked on Plunketts Superfade when I get acne scarring (the brownish type).. I also use it for pigmentation- an it is a little Aussie company! The best discovery I have ever made

      Luc x

  4. Sarah says:

Bookmarking for future reference, you may just save my life…..

  5. Aaaargh yeah don’t you just hate those! Great post, very useful for a fellow acne sufferer.

  6. CJ says:

    Hi Zoe,
Awesome tips! One question- I’m allergic to Sulphites and have a lot of trouble with hair and face products with sodium laurel sulfate in them. Is there a sulfate free drawing paste on the market that might help people like me!?

  7. C says:

JUST A WARNING about the hot compress, many websites say to have it as hot as you can handle but please, please be careful as I managed to actually burn my skin. This led to several layers of burnt, dead, wrinkly skin which are still peeling off a week after ‘the incident’…

  8. Claire says:

I used a Compeed patch on my last blind pimple & gosh darn diggity, it worked! The head appeared overnight.

  9. Jacqui says:

Hey Zoe, can you recommend an overall regime for a pregnant lady? I mainly get whiteheads on my chin but I’m now also getting them on my forehead, and I know a lot of products are out due to the pending baby. Thanks heaps.

    • Rose says:

Jacqui, do you know if you are allowed to use witch hazel? I have extremely sensitive skin, so my doctor told me to use this as a toner. It cleans your skin and does not over-dry it like some toners. I’ve noticed less whiteheads when I use the product consistently (1-2 times daily, or even more!) Witch hazel is supposed to be all natural, and CVS sells huge bottles of it for less than $6.

      • Jess says:

I agree with you Rose, I am an adolescent and I use witch hazel regularly (particularly their blemish gel). It is great on my super sensitive skin and works from the second I put in on my face… Every… Time.

  10. Jen says:

    Hey Zoe,

Is this the same routine you would use on smaller pimples also?

Also if you pick pimples, is that really what causes the scarring (aka post inflammatory hyperpigmentation)?

I tend to get dark pink/light pink scarring that takes FOREVER to go away! (Or new scars replace the faded ones thus I constantly have a “scarred” appearance on my chin area.

    Anyways, great blog!

  11. Ozlicious says:

Love this advice! I love a good drawing paste for bringing heaps of crap up to the surface. I also find that if you don’t have a drawing paste nearby (“what? you don’t?!”), a purifying clay masque will do a similar job.

Can I also suggest a possibility? If you have a good beauty therapist whom you believe to be Rather Excellent, give her a call and ask for a price for her to do one extraction on you and finish with the high frequency machine. If she’s as excellent as you believe her to be, she should be able to find 15-20 minutes to squeeze you and your little friend in (or I guess I should say – out!) and I think she should only charge 20-30 clams for the pleasure. High frequency is an amazingly healing, oxygenating treatment which KILLS BACTERIA. Plus you can be assured that it will all take place with proper hygeine precautions etc. Not that an extraction is difficult to do at home – it’s easy – but the high frequency is simply fabulous if you have an occasion coming up and you just really need that sucker to be GONE and HEALED. Your kind neighbourhood beauty therapist should be happy to oblige. :)

    • fruity says:

Oh man I am all over the high frequency. Have one at home even. But as they cannot be bought by consumers (not at the professional strength you need), I can’t write about them. They have healed many of my pimples, cold sores, even RINGWORM. God they’re good.

  12. Alex says:

Zo. You are a gem. Thank you!
The only way you could have improved this post would’ve been to have published it earlier this year (geee!) I have had so many of these badass, deep down spots and my skin would love me a lot more now if I had followed this advice. So, thanks in advance for when I tackle the next one!

  13. the volcano says:

    Lifesaver Zoe!

A few months ago I made the mistake of picking and trying to prematurely squeeze the biggest underground pimple smack bang in the middle of my nose. I had an important even coming up in 5 days and this pimple would have been right at it’s prime. My worst nightmare followed!
It got really infected and pussy (sorry for the grossness) and kept erupting even though I put layers of Mario Badescue drying lotion over it.
By day 4 I had a fever and had to go to the doctor to get antibiotics! I did not end up going to said event and had the biggest scab on my face for 5 days. Lesson learnt!

  14. Emily says:

    Hi Zoe,
Thank you so much for this post, this is absolutely amazing! Since reading your blog I feel so much more educated in the ways of skin care!
As I am still a bit of a novice, could you recommend a “beginner’s” facial treatment? I have quite sensitive dry skin, prone to some pimples (not acne) and scarring!

I just don’t know where to start!

    Thanks!!

    • Rose says:

Emily, try the Cerave line of cleansers and moisturizers. They are great for sensitive skin, and will prevent your skin from drying out. (It takes some getting used to. I was familiar with the “tingly” sensation from salycilic acid or benzoyl peroxide cleansers that I abused my skin with for years. Cerave doesn’t have the tingle, but your face is still getting clean.)

  15. Ashleigh says:

I had the most enormous blind pimple on my chin a couple of weeks ago. I just decided not to touch it at all! It was hell, but it died down after a few days. I hate the leftover redness from pimples though :( Worst!

  16. Kate says:

Hi Zoe. Thank you for Amazing Face! read twice, once because i’m a Zoe fan and once because I had to take a flight and I am petrified of flying. Great distraction;-) What would you suggest for slightly congested skin? As in, white clogged pores beneath the surface and blackheads? They get worse around “that awesome time of the month.” Mainly cheek and chin area.. Never usually come above and form whiteheads. Just white clogged bumps under skin that always come out easily. Pretty disgusting actually.. Keep being amazingly helpful. I spread the word of your book and blog. Xo

  17. LinaC says:

I see that pimple! I made a conclusion, that most of remedies do not work on this one. It is too deep for topical treatment. I would recommend led-therapy (any device of your choice, there are home devices out there, I have one with different colors and blue is for anti-acne treatment), old good darsonval.

  18. Amy says:

    Dear Fruity

I have so enjoyed these tips and plan to implement them during my next blind pimple episode, however, I have a confession. I recently went about it all wrong. I got right in and squeezed a blindy before it was ripe. I applied MB drying lotion and voila! the next morning a dry flaky mess was all up in my chin. Covering it is almost impossible and any minor touching caused bleeding. Almost a week later, and still a nightmare to cover as it heals and flakes. Any tips on concealing a dry scabby pimple?

    Yours in hopeful gratitude

  21. Damn! I wish I knew about this before I got to the age of 34 and accumulated all my acne scars… I still get blind pimples like this, now mostly on my neck and jaw line – hormonal apparently, so I stay away from dairy and refined sugar which disrupts the hormones and I eat a lot of avocado, a clean diet and drink a lot of water, which helps my skin.

Hi Zoe, I had a blind pimple and made the mistake of not ready this post (stupid me). Yeah…holding the ice on the affected area for too long will actually give you an ice burn. Regardless if you wrap it up with a tea towel enough. If you are going to do this….be very careful or you will end up with a large red spot the size of an ice cube which won’t disappear for a few days.

  29. Jenna says:

  34. Jen says:

I seem to keep getting a blind pimple, that NEVER GOES AWAY! Literally, it’ll hurt for 2 days then stop, and just stays there. Drying cream doesn’t work, and no matter how hot the water it never comes to a head. This is the third one I’ve gotten in a 2 month span. I tried soaking it w/ milk and applying tea tree oil and icing it and that minimizes it but it never goes away…
